The view from the classic day hiker's goal. Note two distinct rock types: the red rhyolite, with almost-glassy shards, and the dark brown basalt on the tablelands at the top of the canyon. This is typical of the entire Snake River Plain: a rhyolite cake with basalt frosting at the top. Since the basalt's at the top, that's what we see as we drive and hike southern Idaho: however, the Plain is about 90% rhyolite and 10% basalt.
